Route 1 Corridor Initiative
Route 1 Economic Development Mission Statement
The people and communities of Southern Chester County envision a region that works together to provide jobs for its citizens and expand its tax base; invests in its business districts to create attractive destinations for commerce and development; protects its agricultural base and conserves its picturesque landscapes; and builds on its sense-of-place and diversity that make the region uniquely suited as a great place to live, work and play.
About the Initiative
With 4 to 5M square feet of potential industrial and commercial space, the Route 1 corridor from Kennett Square to Nottingham will serve as the focal point for development during the next two decades - and offers the best business opportunity - according to officials from the Chester County Economic Development Council.
Southern Chester County already boasts a diverse lineup of businesses from Chatham Financial to Dansko to Genesis Healthcare to Herr Foods, to the mushroom industry that is centered around New Garden Township. Officials from 12 municipalities are collaborating to ensure the proper zoning and infrastructure is in place to draw in businesses.
Route 1 itself makes the corridor between West Nottingham Township and Kennett Township favorable for commercial and industrial growth by allowing for free-flowing traffic, as well as its close proximity to other major roadways in the region. Baltimore Pike provides a good alternative as a secondary route as well.
The Route 1 Initiative is about sustainable, smart growth where local officials work cooperatively to plan out locations for business growth in their communities.
